Sugar Too High

By Kyle, Age 10

COVID hit and I threw up. I thought I had the disease.  Little did I know, it was something bigger. I was going to have a new normal, a new life…

The next morning, my mom had “mom instincts” and rushed me to the hospital. She thought something bad was going on with me, but then a miracle happened. A nurse was diabetic, saw that I was showing symptoms of diabetes, and requested a finger poke. The meter read 600+. After a full blood test, my reading was around 762, and the doctors started working to get my blood sugars down. Any higher and I could have gone into a coma with brain swelling. Unfortunately because of Covid, only one parent could be in the hospital at a time. I got worried. IVs and shots were going into me, and I felt like a pincushion. I asked my mom will I have this forever? It was really hard, but she said yes.

After my experience, I learned to have hope and grit. I understood that Covid would not stop me from accomplishing my goals. Today I am doing everything I would be doing without diabetes and more.
