Rules

By Adilyn, Age 10

I was finally seen in Rules, by Cynthia Lord. The main character Catherine has a  brother with autism. I feel like I can relate to that because my brother was born with mild cerebral palsy and hypermobility. Because of this, my brother’s muscles get worn out a lot faster than most people’s muscles. Like Catherine, I despise it when people make fun of or treat my brother differently because of his disability. Whenever we go to some place that requires walking a lot we have to bring a stroller for my brother or a special pass because he can’t wait in long lines because of his muscles. This makes me feel embarrassed and sometimes I wish he was normal. With my brother comes more responsibility. Catherine’s life is similar to mine, because we both have a big responsibility and wish we could spend more time with just our parents and get no judgment from others.

The number one thing Catherine and I have in common is that we both wish the world was more accepting and kind to people who are different from them.
