Rehearsal

By Autumn, Age 12

“Why you all laying down on my scene?

“It’s just a little break in my routine”

Today was Thursday, April 12th 2020 and like all Tuesdays and Thursdays I had theater. This year’s musical for my age group was Madagascar and for the first time ever I was a lead. I was Gloria the Hippo which meant I was supposed to be “maternal.” Weird, but it was a lead nonetheless. The song we were practicing now was called “Relax, Be Cool, Chill Out.” That song was probably one of the best in the musical. When rehearsal was over, our directors told us that next week we might not meet because of the Coronavirus. I didn’t think it was true, but when I asked my mom sure enough she said it was right. The next day I had the next two weeks off from school. After some time, my mom said I would have theater again, virtually. Those rehearsals were probably the first times I had ever used Zoom. We could never sing together, but it was fun. Now whenever I think about “Relax, Be Cool, Chill Out,” I realize I never recognize good symbolism when I see it.
