Operation Frog Effect

By Emilie, Age 10

When I was in second grade, there were two girls in my class who were best friends. One of the girls, Carrie, acted as if she “owned” her friend Shannon. Shannon was nice to me, but seemed afraid to stand up to Carrie. Carrie was unpredictable. On bad days, she would exclude me from their “Horses” game at recess, would give Shannon the silent treatment, and even tried to close my finger in a door!

When I read Operation Frog Effect by Sarah Scheerger, it reminded me of my own experience! There was a character named Kayley who got easily annoyed and excluded another girl named Emily. Kayley told Aviva that they had to “stop babying Emily” and that in previous grades, they “only sat next to her at lunch to be nice.” I was surprised when I read this book because it was so similar to what happened to me! It was like looking through a mirror and seeing myself! Even the names of the characters were similar. If I’m ever in this situation again, I would tell them that what they’re doing isn’t nice and find other friends to hang out with.
