My oasis

By Kelly, age 12

Ughhhh, the walls of my room are closing in on me. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, nobody to see… I guess I’ll start reading. This was me hunkering down when COVID hit and I couldn’t go to school, see my friends, or leave my house. Read, read, read, that’s what I did. This led me to actually enjoy reading. I read many genres: fantasy, realistic fiction (including the Front Desk series by Kelly Yang), and a bit of classics.

This book felt like finding an oasis in the middle of a dry, barren desert. Her book inspired me to write stories that will hopefully excite and inspire other readers like her book did for me.

Reading changed me! I was indifferent towards reading for my own enjoyment. Then I picked up Divergent by Veronica Roth. This book felt like finding an oasis in the middle of a dry, barren desert. Her book inspired me to write stories that will hopefully excite and inspire other readers like her book did for me. Reading her books helped me escape to another world away from my fear, boredom, my prison (room), and into a world of freedom. Thank you, COVID.
