Inside Out & Back Again

By Reese, Age 11

“Father left home on a navy mission on this day nine years ago when I was almost one,” these words remind me of a true story that my mother told me. Finally, I’ve been seen in a book. Hà, the protagonist, would buy less groceries, so she can buy herself treats. Her mother trusted Hà to get 100 grams of pork, a bushel of water spinach, and five pieces of tofu, but she bought less of each grocery. She got a pouch of toasted coconut, one sugary fried dough, and two crunchy mung beans. When I read these words, a memory danced around in my brain. My mother told me that she would use her breakfast money to buy a book. I noticed that they both used money for different items. This makes me smile because someone out there can relate to what my mother did. Overall, the book I read, Inside Out & Back Again, opened up my heart. The actions of the characters is something I can relate to.
