Hope in Hard Times

By Joey, Age 11

When COVID started in March 2020, things were crazy. I was in 3rd grade at the time and Zoom school wasn’t fun. On March 13th my dad went to the hospital because he wasn’t feeling well. He tested positive for COVID but they let him come home to recover. Three days later, my dad wasn’t getting better so he went back to the hospital. I remained optimistic he would recover.

Unfortunately, my dad needed help to breathe so his doctors put him on a ventilator. My dad was on a ventilator for 22 days and I could not be with him during this time. Once he was extubated, his doctors kept him in the hospital for another week and then he came home. This experience was very scary for me but I never gave up hope that he would recover. I felt hopeful from all the people supporting me such as my neighbors, friends, family, news reporters and my school.

I hope my story helps anyone in the toughest situations feel better. For those that are thankfully not, please know that by being supportive and helpful to someone, you can make a difference.
