Front Desk

By Clara, Age 11

A book that makes me feel finally seen is Front Desk by Kelly Yang. This book is about an immigrant girl who lives in and runs a motel. She is a Chinese girl in a class full of white kids. Just like me. I may be very different from Mia Tang, but some parts of her are mirrors of me. This book makes me feel like I am not fully alone, and that there is always somebody there, filling the emptiness of being the only student of my skin color. It is out of the ordinary when I get to feel special about being Chinese. This book is one of those rare occurrences. Like when we read New From Here in class, and my teacher asks me how to pronounce the words in Chinese.

This book really connects to the problems that we all face as inhabitants of planet Earth. When I read this book, I feel whole.
