First day jitters

By Gurveen, Age 13

I was walking to school with a puzzled expression, wondering why all the teachers were holding up signs. I walked over to all the kids feeling so tiny compared to everyone else even though I was the tallest one there. I skimmed the field hoping I would see at least one of my friends there. I didn’t want to be alone on the first day of school. I walked closer to get a better look but didn’t see anyone I knew. I could feel the girls staring at me. It felt as if they were burning through my skin with their glares. I hated standing there and needed to move. While I was looking around I almost jumped out of my skin when the shrill morning bell blasted in my ears. I quickly hurried over to my class. I saw so many people I couldn’t recognize because of the masks covering their faces, their new haircuts and some of them I’d never even seen before!

I looked behind me and saw my best friend! I sighed with relief and knew this would be an amazing year.
