We asked kids "What book makes YOU feel FINALLY SEEN?" and here were their responses...

A Tale of Magic

By Lia, Age 11

The book that made me feel seen is A Tale of Magic by Chris Colfer. In the story, the main character, Brystal Evergreen, is a girl living in a world of creatures like goblins, trolls, fairies, and elves. Where she lives, women can’t read, get jobs, or even go into libraries. All women do is work around the house. Brystal wanted to escape this world and find a better life. When her father sent her away for breaking the law, Brystal discovered her love for magic and helping people. I can relate to this because sometimes I just want to leave reality and enter a new world.

This book helped me by sweeping me away to a world with extraordinary creatures and magic. It helped me find my love for fantasy.

This book helped me by sweeping me away to a world with extraordinary creatures and magic. It helped me find my love for fantasy. After reading this, I immediately picked up the sequel and started reading. Once I finished the series, I continued to read fantasy books. It was like finding a new piece of myself. That is why A Tale of Magic by Chris Colfer made me feel finally seen.

Three Keys

By Sejal, Age 10

The book that makes me feel like I am finally seen is “Three Keys” by Kelly Yang, because she mentions that Lupe is an “illegal immigrant” because she does not have a green card. I am not an illegal immigrant, because I am a citizen here in America, but my grandparents on both sides came from India. In the story, Kelly Yang shows that everyone is unique, from the Torgia people in Indonesia, to those who come from all parts of the world to move to America for a better life. Kelly Yang expresses all the different cultures around the world, making them feel welcome in America. I am finally seen because of my culture. I am finally seen because Kelly Yang’s stories send different, important messages that all kids should be able to read about. One key message is that you can’t judge someone from the way they look. This book makes me feel that I am finally seen most of all, because now, once people read all of Kelly Yang’s books, they think twice before they can judge me by the way I look.

New From Here

By Harper, Age 11

Hello, my name is Harper, I am 11 and I’m in 5th grade. I am a big fan of Kelly Yang, and my mom (who is also my French teacher) saw the Finally Seen challenge so I decided to join. The book that inspired me to write is “New From Here” by Kelly Yang. When I went to the bookstore, I found an autograph copy of Kelly Yang’s new book. I read the back and I was really interested, because it said the story was about COVID-19 which was happening in my real life as well. It was also Kelly Yang’s true story. I started reading it as soon as we got home, it was amazing.

It was good because I could feel connected to Knox and really experience what he was living in the book.  Since it was Covid, I had to wear masks also and it was hard at first, but I eventually got used to it, just like the characters in this book. This story made me start writing a journal with my daily life emotions. I like writing stories on my computer, I feel happy and hopefully, one day, I will be able to publish them.

I can’t wait to read your writing!

This is your opportunity to gush about your favorite book to the world! Tell us why this book makes you feel FINALLY SEEN! The first stories will appear here Feb 13, 2023!
